Every job is done by a licensed plumber. Water and gas both misbehave at inconvenient times, so this page is triage: what shuts off first, what cannot wait, and who fixes what.
The rest of what we do is listed on our Kippa-Ring plumbing page, from taps to full renovations.

First Moves Before You Dial
Quick first steps for a plumbing emergency:
- Water flooding out: turn the water off at the meter before anything else, then ring (07) 3523 6484.
- A gas odour: turn off whatever appliance runs on gas, air the room through doors and windows, and keep away from electrical switches. Still smell it? Shut the supply at the meter or cylinder and phone (07) 3523 6484, or 000 if the smell won't go.
- Drips, slow leaks and running cisterns: book a visit rather than treating it as urgent. Ring (07) 3523 6484 and we'll find a time.
We're available 24/7, and there's no extra cost for nights, weekends or public holidays.

Gas Smells, Burst Pipes and Overflowing Toilets
Four faults cannot wait: a gas smell, a burst pipe or a serious water leak, a total loss of water or gas supply, and a toilet that will not work. Each one can flood a home, poison the air inside it, or cut a household off entirely.
The gas smell leads that list because it carries fire risk. Our gas leak repairs page covers that fault in full.
A leak at the meter box, or soggy ground there while the meter holds still, sits on Unitywater's side of the line. The utility takes those; everything on the house side comes to us.
Rentals follow a set list. Queensland tenancy law spells out the emergency repairs, and everything the law leaves out is routine.
A renter reports by phoning the emergency contact the lease names. Words alone are a valid report.

Dripping Taps Wait, Burst Pipes Do Not
A fault contained at one fitting can hold for a booked time, while gas, sewage pushing up a drain, or flooding no valve stops is a phone-now fault on any day of the week. Isolate first, then judge.
A single dripping tap or a slow basin keeps until a booked slot without any harm done. A toilet that runs on has its own page; see toilet repairs.
Renters get one extra rule here. A repair missing from the tenancy list is routine, so it books a visit instead of paging anyone.
Water loss you cannot see is a different problem again. Our leak detection page explains how we trace it before it turns into a large bill.

Meter Taps and Isolation Valves Explained
Start at the fixture: an isolation valve under a sink or behind a toilet closes that one fitting and leaves the rest of the home running. The stop tap next to the water meter closes the whole house, and the tap turns clockwise.
Check one thing before the meter tap goes closed. No appliance should suffer from losing supply, and a hot water tank is the usual thing to think about first.
For gas, shut the supply at the meter, or at the cylinder on a bottled setup, if you can reach either safely. Do not switch electrical devices on or off, and open doors and windows while you work.
If the smell carries on after the supply is closed, call 000. The gas bill carries the supplier's emergency number in its top right-hand corner for anything short of that.

After-Hours Faults on Sixties Streets
Kippa-Ring grew off farmland and swamp in one 1960s and 1970s building wave, so the pipes behind most walls here have had half a century of service. Supply lines, valves and cisterns from that era fail without much warning, and usually at a bad hour.
Homes up and down Anzac Avenue and George Street carry fittings of that vintage. A stop tap seized by age or a cistern cracked mid-cycle does not pick a convenient weekday, and the first cold snap tends to bring a rush of them.
At the last census, 32.4 per cent of homes here were owned outright, so a late-night call often comes from the person who pays for the fix. Either way, the first move is the same: shut the supply, then ring.

Where Your Own Part Ends in an Emergency
Gas faults belong to a licensed gasfitter; mending a broken pipe and clearing a blocked sanitary drain belong to a QBCC licensee. Those pipe and drain jobs are minor work in Queensland: no permit, no Form 4, and no approval holding up the repair.
A Form 4 is the notice a licensee files when a job counts as notifiable; minor work skips it. That is why nothing administrative stands between your call and the fix.
Your part is the shut-offs and containing the water. The repair on the pipe itself is ours, and our burst pipe repairs page covers what it involves.
Questions People Ask in the Middle of the Night
Call (07) 3523 6484Should I call a plumber now or wait until morning?
Isolate the fault first, then decide. A dripping tap or a slow basin holds until a booked time. Gas, sewage rising or water no valve stops deserves the phone straight away, whatever the hour.
Where is the main water shut-off at my Kippa-Ring home?
Your main shut-off is a stop tap at the water meter, in a lidded box flush with the verge; turn that tap clockwise to close the supply. Each fixture also has an isolation valve. Before shutting the meter tap, check that no appliance, such as a hot water tank, needs the supply left on.
Who do I call for a burst pipe at the water meter?
Report that one to Unitywater. The pipe up to the meter is the utility's; everything past the meter to your fixtures is yours. Soggy ground with the meter holding still points to the utility's side; a meter ticking over points to yours and to us.
Can I fix a burst pipe myself in an emergency?
No, you cannot. Mending a broken pipe is minor work that a QBCC licensee must carry out, whatever the hour. Close the valves and contain the water; leave the repair itself to the licensed plumber.
What if the whole street in Kippa-Ring has no water?
A street-wide outage is on the utility's side of the meter, so report the outage to Unitywater. If only one home is dry, check the meter tap has not been knocked closed, then look at your own pipes from the meter inwards.
